Introduction to Simultaneous Interpretation of ASL

Instructor: Dr. Steven D. Collins, Chair of the Department of Interpretation, was the first Deaf graduate of the MA in Interpretation program at Gallaudet in 1992. He received his Ph.D. in linguistics with a focus on adverbials in Tactile ASL in 2004. His specialty, DeafBlind interpreting, is the focus of his national and international speaking engagements, consultations and research. As a Fullbright recipient, Dr. Collins spent six months in Italy developing curriculum and teaching DeafBlind interpreters working with both children and adults.

Course Description/Objectives:
This extension course is an introductory course dealing
with interpretation of English to ASL monologues.
Emphasis is placed on comprehension of English prior
to interpretation into ASL. Course topics
include effort in interpretation, coping skills,
simultaneity and repair strategies.
Prerequisite: If taking the
course for graduate credit (INT 665), must have
a BA/BS. Students must have fluency in ASL and
English at levels which permit full comprehension
of source texts in either language. Students
must have expressive language abilities which
are commensurate with their current level of
receptive skills. The course will be conducted
in ASL.

- Importance of comprehension in interpretation
- Review and incorporation of underlying cognitive
and linguistic skills
- Error analysis taxonomy
- Student self-assessment in Simultaneous Interpreting

- Skill building exercises

toward a Gallaudet degree. PST credits may be

Before the registration deadline: Tuition
is refundable upon written request; however, a
$50.00 administrative fee will be retained. Written
requests must be received by the deadline or refund
will be processed as noted below.
After the registration

Partial tuition is refundable upon written request
(application fee and material fee, where applicable,
is not refundable). Schedule is as follows:
