Course Description/Objectives:
This course focuses on the development and use of student-directed portfolios to support the academic growth, self-awareness, and self-determination of students in grades K-12.  It incorporates current practices in student portfolio use and the constructs of Portfolios for Student Growth (PSG), a portfolio process designed for deaf and hard of hearing students and useful for all students.  Portfolios for Student Growth integrates 21st century skill development into a process of self-determination that challenges students to connect learning with their desired futures.  Participants will explore the rationale and benefits of student portfolio use with students of all ability levels including a focus on students with disabilities.  The course will also address how a student-directed portfolio process engages elementary - high school students in addressing key skills for academic and life-long success: independence, responsibility, organization, self-awareness, and self-determination.  Each component of portfolio development: outcomes, goal-setting, evidence, reflection, and assessment will be introduced and modeled.  Participants will apply concepts to their professional environment and will enjoy a highly interactive learning environment.  They will apply readings and discussions to course activities and to the creation of their own portfolio development plan.

Course Outcomes:

  1. Participants will explore how a student-directed portfolio process engages students in addressing key skills for academic and post-secondary success: independence, academic and personal responsibility, organization and time-management, self-awareness, and self-determination.

  2. Participants will learn how the Outcomes – Portfolio connection serves as a critical framework for linking academic planning, progress, and assessment with post-secondary transition.

  3. Participants will discuss and apply essential portfolio components including outcome development, reflection and meta-cognition, evidence collection and review, giving and receiving feedback, and formative and summative assessment.

  4. Participants will design a student portfolio framework to meet the goals and needs of their students, school, or program.
