Course Description:
The focus of this course is to provide
foundational knowledge and skills for students
and professionals preparing to work with families
who have deaf or hard of hearing children, as well
as for professionals already in the field. The
students will explore how to develop meaningful
and reciprocal relations with families. The students
will explore appropriate techniques to improve
one’s ability to listen to families. The
course will cover ecological perspectives and family
systems; family adaptation; family support and
involvement; communicating with families; family
and cultural diversity; family assessment and the
differences that parents experience when having
a child who is deaf, hard of hearing, multidisabled
or a child with a cochlear implant. This course
addresses multicultural issues through its focus
on understanding the impact that culture plays
on raising one’s children as well as how
families view deafness and education.
