Families with Deaf Children

Instructor:

Gail Solit, adjunct faculty in the Department of Education at Gallaudet University, has a B.A. in psychology from George Washington University and a M.A. in Special Education, Infants and Toddlers, from George Washington University. She has taught courses on early childhood environments, families, schools and community partnerships, assessment, introduction to special education, methodology courses in Early Childhood Education and development at Gallaudet University. She has also taught and reviewed programs in Egypt, Thailand and Hawaii related to deaf education of young children. Ms. Solit coordinated two federal grants on integrating deaf, hard of hearing and hearing preschoolers. She has co-authored two books and has written several articles related to deaf and hard of hearing children. Ms. Solit is currently the Educational Planning Coordinator at Kendall Demonstration Elementary School on Gallaudet's campus, working with children (from birth through third grade), teachers, support staff and parents to create and implement appropriate IFSPs and IEPs. Ms. Solit has also served for 11 years on the board of the National Coalition for Campus Children's Centers.

Course Description:

The focus of this course is to provide foundational knowledge and skills for students and professionals preparing to work with families who have deaf or hard of hearing children, as well as for professionals already in the field. The students will explore how to develop meaningful and reciprocal relations with families. The students will explore appropriate techniques to improve one’s ability to listen to families. The course will cover ecological perspectives and family systems; family adaptation; family support and involvement; communicating with families; family and cultural diversity; family assessment and the differences that parents experience when having a child who is deaf, hard of hearing, multidisabled or a child with a cochlear implant. This course addresses multicultural issues through its focus on understanding the impact that culture plays on raising one’s children as well as how families view deafness and education.

PREREQUISITES: Successful completion of an undergraduate degree. A copy of your transcript must accompany your application to enroll in this class. If you are taking this course for PST credits, there is no prerequisite.

Required text: The Young Deaf or Hard of Hearing Child: A Family-Centered Approach to Early Education, edited by Bodner-Johnson, Barbara and Sass-Lehrer, Marilyn, 2003. You can order this book online. Additional materials will be posted online.

REFUND POLICY:
Before the registration deadline:  Tuition is refundable upon written request; however, a $50.00 administrative fee will be retained. Written requests must be received by the registration deadline or refund will be processed as noted below:

After the registration deadline:  Partial tuition is refundable upon written request (processing fee and material fee, where applicable, is not refundable). Schedule is as follows:

withdrawals after 3/23/07 - 50% tuition refundable 
withdrawals by 3/30/07 - 25% tuition refundable 
withdrawals after 3/30/07 - no refund of tuition

PST credit: Courses with the prefix PST (Professional Studies) are continuing education credits offered for professionals who may not desire academic credits. These credits are not applicable toward a Gallaudet degree. PST credits may be transferable to your home institution; it is your responsibility to check with your home institution should you desire to transfer credits.
