Fingerspelled Word Recognition for Interpreters

Instructor: Dr. Steven D. Collins, Chair of the Department of Interpretation, was the first Deaf graduate of the MA in Interpretation program at Gallaudet in 1992. He received his Ph.D. in linguistics with a focus on adverbials in Tactile ASL in 2004. His specialty, DeafBlind interpreting, is the focus of his national and international speaking engagements, consultations and research. As a Fulbright recipient, Dr. Collins spent six months in Italy developing curriculum and teaching DeafBlind interpreters working with both children and adults.

Course Description/Objectives:
This course is designed for interpreters who already have experience in interpreting from a written language to English-based signing to ASL, and who can usually understand most of the message but frequently miss fingerspelled words on the first try. Emphasis is on fingerspelled word recognition strategies, not with fingerspelled word production. Fingerspelled words will be studied in context and in isolation.

Prerequisite: If taking the course for graduate credit (INT 691), must have a BA/BS. Must have interpreting experience. The course will be conducted in ASL.

*PST credit: Courses with the prefix PST (Professional Studies and Training) are continuing education credits offered for professionals who may not desire academic credits. These credits are not applicable toward a Gallaudet degree. PST credits may be transferable to your home institution; it is your responsibility to check with your home institution should you desire to transfer credits.

Refund Policy: 

Before the registration deadline
:  Tuition is refundable upon written request; however, a $50.00 administrative fee will be retained. Written requests must be received by the deadline or refund will be processed as noted below.

After the registration deadline:  Partial tuition is refundable upon written request (application fee and material fee, where applicable, is not refundable). Schedule is as follows:

withdrawals after 3/16/07- 50% tuition refundable 
withdrawals by 3/23/07 - 25% tuition refundable 
withdrawals after 3/23/07- no refund of tuition

It is IMPERATIVE that your written request for refund is in the office of GURC at Johnson County Community College by the registration deadline.
