Methods of
Second Language Teaching
(PST321-EXT1, 3 credits)
Frederick, MD
Course Description:
This 3-credit course focuses on
principled approaches to developing and implementing
classroom methods and strategies for language
teaching. It also investigates linguistic,
psychological, and attitudinal factors that
influence student-teacher interactions in the
classroom. The course examines in detail the most
important teaching methodologies that have evolved
over the past thirty years. Following a thorough
analysis of each methodology, in terms of its
theoretical justification and supporting empirical
research, students will endeavor to teach and learn
some aspects of a second language through the
implementation of each of the methodologies.
Rationale:
In order to
teach effectively, one needs to understand 2nd
language teaching methodology and how adults learn a
2nd language. The course covers both -- how adults
learn a 2nd language and various methods of teaching
a 2nd language. The goal is that teachers teach
better after understanding theories and methods.
Course objectives:
Students will be able to:
-
recognize and discuss several
methods and theories of 2nd language instruction;
-
adapt to method that fits with
philosophy and mission of the institution;
-
use activities that fits with
the philosophy of the program;
-
select activities that fit with
the chosen method

professionals who may not desire academic credits. PST
courses carry Gallaudet University credits but are not
applicable toward a Gallaudet University degree or

accrediting organizations do accept PST credits,
however, so students should check to determine
applicability of coursework elsewhere.
