ASL Learning Activities
(PST 315, 1 credit)

Course Description:

This course is designed to provide ASL teachers an opportunity to develop, create, and share classroom activities for their ASL users.  Through brainstorming and discussion participants will explore problems and challenges using various language-learning activities at a wide range of settings.  Working groups will review literature on language learning activities to identify which ones are appropriate for ASL learning.

Instructor:

Holly Roth, an American Sign Language Teacher at the Center for American Sign Language Literacy (CASLL), began her employment at Gallaudet University in 1986. She earned her Bachelor's degree in Biology from Gallaudet and her Master's degree in Deaf Education/American Sign Language from Western Maryland College. Ms. Roth holds national certification as a Deaf Certified Interpreter through the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf. She has served as a sign language instructor and trainer for over 30 years, providing ASL teacher mentoring to individuals from around the globe. She is also a workshop presenter, deaf-blind/relay interpreter, and medical interpreter.

PREREQUISITES: Experience teaching ASL and familiarity with the Vista: “Signing Naturally” series and “Learning American Sign Language”.

Course Materials: Handouts will be provided.

  Saturday, Oct. 6, 2007 -- 8:30 am – 5:30 pm

NOTE:  Tuition and fees are subject to change without advance notice.


*PST credit: 
*PST credit: Courses with the prefix PST (Professional Studies and Training) are continuing education credits offered for professionals who may not desire academic credits. PST courses carry Gallaudet University credits but are not applicable toward a Gallaudet University degree or certificate program. Some other universities and accrediting organizations do accept PST credits, however, so students should check to determine applicability of coursework elsewhere.

Registration Deadline:  September 21, 2007

Refund Policy: 
Before the registration deadline:  Tuition is refundable upon written request; however, a $50.00 administrative fee will be retained. Written requests must be received by the deadline or refund will be processed as noted below.

After the registration deadline:  Partial tuition is refundable upon written request (application fee and material fee, where applicable, is not refundable). Schedule is as follows:

withdrawals after 9/21/07- 50% tuition refundable 
withdrawals by - 9/28/07 - 25% tuition refundable 
withdrawals after - 9/28/07 - no refund of tuition

It is IMPERATIVE that your written request for refund is in the Professional Studies and Outreach Office by the registration deadline.
