PST 316, ASL Assessment I
Charlotte, North Carolina

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This is a one-credit course for individuals who are interested in learning how to create tests for their classroom settings. The course will focus on factors involved in developing and administering a test on ASL learners' linguistic proficiency and cultural competence. Discussion will be on which test is the most appropriate for a specific audience in a specific setting, test reliability and validity and grading system. Students will have the opportunity to develop and administer tests.

Performance Objectives:

The student will:

  • Identify and explain the various methods of sign language evaluation;

  • Distinguish the difference between proficiency and competence testing;

  • Develop comprehension and expressive test appropriate for each level and specific kinds of appropriate settings;

  • Select testing items that are appropriate for each ASL class level;

  • Demonstrate appropriate ways of conducting a test;

  • Distinguish the difference between reliability and validity testing;

  • Develop grading system for any given ASL courses; and

  • Demonstrate the ability to grade tests.

Course Requirements:

The student will:

  • Attend all sessions (12.5 hours altogether);

  • Actively participate throughout the sessions (there will be no passive observers); and

  • Produce testing items as required by the instructor.

PREREQUISITES: Experience teaching ASL

INSTRUCTOR:  Jean Gordon is currently an ASL diagnostician/evaluator in the Department of ASL and Deaf Studies.  Previously, she taught American Sign Language for various programs at Gallaudet and served as a visiting professor Viet Nam and Thailand. Jean has an M.S. in Deaf Education: Teaching American Sign Language from McDaniel College

All fees must be sent with your application form. 

*PST credit: Courses with the prefix PST (Professional Studies and Training) are continuing education credits offered for professionals who may not desire academic credits. PST courses carry Gallaudet University credits but are not applicable toward a Gallaudet University degree or certificate program. Some other universities and accrediting organizations do accept PST credits, however, so students should check to determine applicability of coursework elsewhere.

Refund Policy: 

Before the registration deadline
:  Tuition is refundable upon written request; however, a $50.00 administrative fee will be retained. Written requests must be received by the deadline or refund will be processed as noted below.

After the registration deadline:  Partial tuition is refundable upon written request (application fee and material fee, where applicable, is not refundable). Schedule is as follows:

withdrawals after 10/17/2008- 50% tuition refundable 
withdrawals by10/24/2008 - 25% tuition refundable 
withdrawals after 10/24/08- no refund of tuition

It is IMPERATIVE that your written request for refund is in the office of GURC at Flagler College by the registration deadline.
